Protect Your Spa & Pool Before the Storm

by Percy Chan 09 Apr 2026 0 Comments

With a storm forecast for New Zealand this weekend, now’s the time to get your spa pool or swimming pool storm-ready. A little preparation can save you from costly repairs, water damage, and unnecessary clean-up.

Here’s your simple checklist to protect your spa and pool before bad weather hits:

1. Secure Your Spa Cover

Strong winds can easily lift or damage your spa cover.

  • Make sure your cover is properly locked down with straps
  • Remove any loose items sitting on top
  • If your cover is lightweight or worn, consider weighing it down temporarily

A damaged cover can lead to debris flooding your spa and heat loss.

2. Clear Surrounding Debris

Storms bring leaves, branches, and dirt—keep them out of your water.

  • Trim nearby trees or loose branches
  • Remove outdoor furniture, toys, and accessories
  • Store lightweight items that could blow into your pool or spa

3. Balance Your Water Chemistry

Rainwater can throw your water chemistry off balance.

Before the storm:

  • Test and adjust pH and alkalinity
  • Add a sanitiser (chlorine or bromine)
  • Shock your spa or pool if needed

This helps prevent cloudy water and bacteria growth after heavy rain.

4. Protect Electrical Components

Your spa and pool systems rely on electrical equipment—keep it safe.

  • Ensure your spa controller and connections are sealed and dry
  • Check that outdoor power points are weather-protected
  • Turn off power if flooding is a risk

5. Lower Water Levels (Pools Only)

For swimming pools, heavy rain can cause overflow.

  • Slightly lower the water level (but don’t drain too much)
  • Ensure overflow systems are clear and working

For spas, keep water at normal levels to protect pumps and heaters.

6. Clean Filters Before the Storm

A clean filter handles storm debris much better.

  • Clean or replace your filter
  • Ensure your system is running efficiently

This reduces strain on your equipment during and after the storm.

7. Turn Off Water Features

If you have fountains, waterfalls, or jets:

  • Switch them off before the storm
  • Prevent damage from debris clogging or wind exposure

After the Storm: What to Do Next

Once the weather clears:

  • Remove debris from water
  • Clean filters again
  • Test and rebalance water chemistry
  • Run your system to circulate and clean the water

Final Tip

Preparation is key. Spending 30–60 minutes now can save hours of cleanup and unnecessary costs later.
