Is Your Pool Filter Ready for Summer?

by Percy Chan 10 Oct 2025 0 Comments

Summer is just around the corner — and that means more time outdoors, relaxing, and cooling off in the pool. Before you dive in, it’s important to make sure your pool is ready for the season. One of the most crucial — and often overlooked — steps in pool preparation is looking after your filter system.

Your filter works hard all year round to keep the water clean and clear. Oils, sunscreen, and fine debris can build up inside, reducing its efficiency. A quick surface rinse won’t cut it — your filter needs a proper deep clean before the summer heat arrives.

Step 1: Remove and Rinse Your Filter

Start by turning off your pool pump and carefully removing the filter cartridge, sand filter top, or DE grid. If you have a cartridge filter, spray between each pleat with a garden hose to wash away trapped debris. For sand filters, set your valve to “backwash” and run until the water in the sight glass looks clear.

Step 2: Deep Clean with BioGuard Filter Brite

For a truly thorough clean, use BioGuard Filter Brite. It breaks down stubborn oils, grime, and organic build-up that regular rinsing or backwashing can’t remove.

  • Cartridge filters: Soak the cartridge overnight in a bucket with diluted Filter Brite, then rinse thoroughly before reinstalling.

  • Sand filters: Add the recommended dose of Filter Brite directly into the skimmer while the system is running on “filter.” Leave it to circulate overnight, then backwash the next morning. This helps loosen and flush out deep-seated contaminants trapped in the sand bed.

Regular deep cleaning not only restores proper water flow but also extends the life of your filter media — keeping your pool sparkling clear all summer long.

Step 3: Inspect and Refresh if Needed

While your filter is out of action, check it carefully. If your cartridge pleats are frayed, cracked, or collapsing, it’s time for a replacement. For sand filters, inspect the sand level and condition — sand should generally be replaced every 3–5 years, depending on use. Worn-out sand can reduce filtration performance and cloud your pool water.

Step 4: Restart and Circulate

Once everything is cleaned, reassemble your system and run your pump for several hours to circulate the water. This ensures everything is operating efficiently and your water is balanced before the first summer swim.
