Get Your Spa Ready for Winter

As the temperature drops, there’s nothing better than soaking in a warm spa pool on a crisp winter evening. Winter is actually one of the best times to refill and refresh your spa pool, ensuring clean water, balanced chemicals, and optimal performance during the months you’ll likely use it the most.
If your spa water has been sitting for a while or is due for a change, follow this simple step-by-step guide from The Spa Shop to prepare your spa for winter relaxation.
Step 1: Turn Off the Power
Before doing anything, make sure your spa pool is completely powered off at the mains or control panel.
This prevents pumps or heaters from running while the spa is empty, which could cause damage.
Step 2: Drain the Spa Pool
Locate the drain valve on your spa pool and attach a garden hose if needed to direct the water away safely.
Tips:
-
Drain water to an appropriate outdoor area or drain.
-
Avoid draining onto lawns or gardens if chemical levels are high.
-
For a deeper clean, you may want to run a pipe cleaner through the spa system before draining.
Allow the spa to empty completely before moving on.
Step 3: Clean the Spa Shell
With the spa empty, take the opportunity to clean the interior shell.
Use:
-
A non-abrasive spa cleaner such as BioGuard Squeaky Clean
-
A soft cloth or sponge
This helps remove:
-
Biofilm
-
Dirt and body oils
-
Residue around the waterline
Avoid household cleaners, as they can damage spa surfaces or affect water chemistry later.
Step 4: Rinse and Clean the Filters
Your filters play a big role in keeping water clear.
Steps:
-
Remove the filter cartridges.
-
Rinse them thoroughly with a garden hose.
-
If they’re very dirty, soak them in a filter cleaning solution such as CW Filter Cleaner.
If the filters are old or worn, winter is a good time to replace them for better filtration.

Step 5: Refill the Spa Pool
Place your garden hose into the filter compartment or filter well when refilling. This helps prevent airlocks in the plumbing system.
Fill until the water level reaches just above the highest jet.

Step 6: Power On and Balance the Water
Once the spa is full:
-
Turn the power back on.
-
Let the pumps circulate the water.
-
Test the water using spa test strips.
Balance the key levels:
Balanced water keeps your spa safe, clear, and comfortable to soak in.
Step 7: Heat It Up and Enjoy
Set your spa to your preferred temperature (usually 37–39°C) and allow it time to heat.
Once it reaches temperature, your spa is ready for relaxing winter soaks.
There’s nothing better than stepping into warm, bubbling water while the air outside is crisp and cool.
